Oh no, bad idea, building a storage from expanders sucks. Tried it recently, still have a unfinished project on the table next to me.
The main issue isn't even the sata cables but routing all of the power lanes and controlling the spin-up power draw sucks.
Edit: For a hand full of disks, sure. but anything comparable to the amount in a disk array forget it (or better get very good at electrical engineering too...
