There's one more factor here, and it's something that affects me more than you probably. Rejection.
I am not a very confident person by nature, and I feel rejection especially harshly.
So imagine you step into party and not only is everyone loud, but you actually have some friends there... Who are too busy being loud to notice you even turned up. Ouch!
For someone who already feels small and insignificant, there's an amplification of emotion that comes from shouty places. Big ouch.
