when I view someone as being able to take care of themselves
I trust them to make sensible decisions, I trust them if they get into trouble they have abilities to get themselves out of it (including the constitution to find it if they don't)
means I don't have to worry about them hurting themselves, being dependent on me, or throwing off blame inappropriately, or making deals with the devil to make their woes better. they can hold their own and they can grow on their own as a result. it means I can trust they can think for themselves, that they try to find the reality threads in the world, and that the words they speak will be more honest than not as a result. I can listen to or watch them to find good information and admire them for the privilege to do so
