AI is being pushed not because it's good or useful, but because we were starting to see diminishing returns on increasing device specs. Not everyone... but particularly Microsoft + Intel et al. The rest just chased the ambulance.
OS overheads on a modern, mid-ranged laptop, have become so small that it would essentially do it's job forever in general computing roles.
Need to add some performance 'resistors' in.
