For me, i felt like it was pretty dumb to have to dedicate crappier hardware to a node. I have a massive enterprise stack ready to run these things, but the size of the blocks forced me to move it away from my precious SSD SAN. So I just stuffed the entire .bitcoin dir onto the network HDD array. It's the latency that seems to be the major issue. So I just bind mounted .bitcoin/blocks to the HDD and left everything else on the SAN array.
