Check out John McPhee, or just grab a copy of the New Yorker or n+1 or Bookforum. Susan Sontag’s “Notes on Camp.” Jhumpa Lahiri’s “In Translation.” And of course all essayists owe their spirit of discovery through writing to Montaigne.
