Alastair Reynolds isn't a horror author, but he's very good at building a sense of dread and horror around events in the history of his worlds.
For example alluding to a "failed space colony" (creepy) where the children were "raised by robots" and it "all went wrong." The omission of detail makes it all the more horrible.
When I think of a neat story idea my initial instinct is to just ... tell it in real time. Some stories carry more weight when they are the thing no one wants to talk about.
