I had a machine in 2000 that had a fault so severe that it would only work on Debian. I could only assume that the fault just wasn't triggered by debian.
Eventually it showed up - the entire south bridge failed (lost one function at a time, starting with USB).
Eventually its USB would only work with a uhci card - ohci ones just failed after a couple of hours. Later it failed completely.
