I wrote 'his' because historically, secretaries were men. Highly skilled, trusted and well remunerated.
Secretarial work became 'unskilled' when women took it over, as in the secretary stenographing letters for the boss.
Unskilled means, of course, not unskilled, but under-valued. Low paid. Low social status.
Then, as we so much else, secretarial work has been automated.
With the advent of the desktop computer, the boss could jot down his own letter, or even dictate it to a machine.
