Um... I don't know how old pops is or when he bought his first home, but our first home loan in 1979 was 12.9%. Also, the cost of homes was proportionate to income. We were making around $25,000 (BEFORE taxes/ins) and the house cost $60K
There seems to be gross misinformation about what things looked like for the "parents", but the historical information is readily available. It's not economically worse today than it was then. We did have cheaper health ins though.
