Any time I post about this I get a few scolds (invariable non-academics) telling me I should be "nicer" or "more understanding".
I'm doing the best I can. And I think it's much kinder to be clear about how to get into grad school than to waste time reading a flood of incomplete email "applications" from students who have no actual interest in my research area.
