With just 25 cents, he embarked on an initial print run of 300 copies of the Chicago Defender. Operating from a small apartment owned by his landlady, Henrietta Plumer Lee, Abbott single-handedly wrote, printed, and folded the four-page, six-column paper. He then distributed copies door-to-door within the burgeoning black community of Chicago.
