At age 21, Robert Abbott pursued his education in the printing trade at Hampton Institute in Virginia. After 4 years, he completed the printing course and fulfilled the academic requirements for a bachelor's degree in 1896. Following a brief stint as a part-time printer and teacher, Abbott's unsuccessful legal venture led him back to Chicago and the printing industry.
