However, the calculation of potential income is a bit off, at least from my point of view. In my field, most people had half a budget position at an institute, which is about the same as a scholarship. But if you have a scholarship, most people need an additional 25% position at the institute (because of health insurance) or they had a 75% or even 100% position outright.
On the other hand, the amount of work you have to put into a thesis is not comparable to a normal job. I estimate that I worked between 60 and 80 hours a week. If I'd been self-employed, the potential income would have been much higher.
Still, it's a funny way to think about your PhD time 😁
