Yes I have. Each major change of XFree86 and then XOrg Server broke KDE, Xfce, & GNOME, who all relied on it at the time. That's why it never really changed much after 2012 and was "so stable". XWayland on the other hand will be maintained and should be usable long into the future for those legacy apps.

Wayland continues to evolve. I do hate the freedesktop bickering, though.
