Its probably not what you said, but the general perception of people pushing Bitcoin as being scammers. They are the ones in everyone's face and hacking social media to peddle scams. The couple of times I have mentioned Bitcoin on Facebook, people have asked if I was hacked. They can't tell the genuine potential from a scammer.
