We don't really have any mechanism for contraction observed empirically so it's most likely not a literal contraction of space, if that's what happens. It's probably something more fundamental than space as we see it that will create something new. It's possible we'll find whatever that thing is but it might be imperceptible, we're already reaching the limit of how much senses can be directly amplified by tools.
