probably depends on exact street sweepers, etc. But I do believe it reduces risk of getting a tire puncture (or sliding out in a corner on a bike) *in lanes that are regularly swept*. Most places I've seen it, it seems okay-ish (and unswept areas are obvious and really really dangerous).
