Better way is to turn on FileVault (if it is not on already). Then boot into recovery mode and enter an incorrect password every time it wants to unlock the disk. Eventually it will get to a point where your only option is to erase or reset (depending on age of machine). This will erase the FileVault encryption key rendering the disk scrambled. Let it install an OS from the Internet (or not) but your data is now gone.
