While I like the idea of a nationwide strike, I think it would be tough to organize and pull off because there isn’t just one union representing every teacher in the country. There are a lot of state and local unions at play. My local union secured nuts-and-bolts things like 8-hour work days, annual cost-of-living peanut raises (😉), health and dental insurance, limits on class sizes and the number of classes we taught, duty-free lunches, and more. I never felt connected to a national teachers’ union, though, and am not really sure what they actually do.
