It's best practice not to do it since it breaks all kinds of things. I don't think it's explicitly disallowed per RFC (maybe I'm wrong) these days, but you're basically asking for chaos if you do it.
I need to put a test in Partytime for that. I'm not sure how to check a string for non-utf8 chars in Javascript though.
