When a woman is pregnant there’s this belief that she can “mark” or influence her baby, sometimes it comes in the form of a birthmark or it can even be a personality thing. Like if she is craving something, or if something scares her or captivates her, the infant might show signs of it. A couple examples I know of - my mamaw loved to eat strawberries when she was pregnant with my dad and would lay in the sun and basically eat til she got sick, and he was born with a mark that was the very picture of a strawberry. My great aunt was pregnant in Chicago and was always visiting a zoo and feeling sorry for the monkeys, and her son was born with a gigantic birthmark - basically a monkey arm - that had to be surgically removed. One woman was startled when she shattered a tea cup and the baby was born with a tea cup birthmark. :)
