“#GCHQ boss backs Starmer”
“This week, the former head of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), David #Omand, came out in support of Keir Starmer’s national security programme.
Omand was the director of Britain’s largest spy agency between 1996 and 1997, before taking up a post as Cabinet Office security and intelligence co-ordinator in 2002.
In 2003, Omand was among those to decide that Dr David #Kelly should be pursued for talking to the media about the UK government’s dodgy dossier on Iraq’s non-existent Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD).
The following year, he recommended that John #Scarlett, who promoted the Iraqi WMD disinformation campaign, be appointed as head of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (#SIS or #MI6).
Since serving in government, Omand has worked for a number of arms companies including #Babcock International and #Leonardo-Finmeccanica, both of which are currently supplying Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza.
‘Labour’s announcement of a triple-lock on our nuclear deterrent indicates that we can in future trust the party to stick to serious defence policy’, Omand wrote this week in the Daily Telegraph.
This is a remarkable endorsement, particularly given how Britain’s acting and former intelligence chiefs briefed against former Labour party leader Jeremy #Corbyn in the run-up to the 2019 general election.
As Declassified found at the time, officials in the UK and military establishment were the sources for at least 34 major national media stories that cast Corbyn as a danger to British security.
One of those was Sir Richard #Dearlove, the former head of MI6, who wrote an article on the eve of the general election under the headline: ‘Jeremy Corbyn is a danger to this nation. At MI6, which I once led, he wouldn’t clear the security vetting’.
Unlike Corbyn, Starmer has long standing links with Britain’s intelligence community.
In 2013, as Director of Public Prosecutions, Starmer attended MI5 chief Jonathan #Evans’ leaving party, just one year after he had cleared the security service from prosecution over its role in #CIA torture operations.”
