Uneris 饕餮姐姐 (npub1zf4…3zta) I agree that art has always struggled with commercial aspect. Many great artists have toiled in obscurity to only be known after they die, and others have toiled in obscurity only to never be known, and many garbage things have always been popular. (Ever listen to top music charts from 70 years ago? It will dispel any belief you might have that music was better in the past.) I just think that this has gone from being mostly economic to being a part of the culture too. Engaging with dumb shit for the purpose of passing the time seems to have been viewed more honestly in the past, whereas nowadays you can't have an honest conversation about the merits of something without someone getting mad at you. Snobs will never be dominant but I get the impression that snobs had more place in the world in the past then they do now. I think the natural endpoint of this is every community eventually becoming like the gaming community, where everyone pretends games are amazing because they're functional pieces of software and the only controversy that ever occurs is culture war shit instead of any discussion over meaning.
I could be wrong of course since I can only see this from my modern zoomer point of view. A lot of amazing art takes time to find its way into the pantheon.
