I think the problem is what people are listening on, and engineers mixing for those devices, trying to compensate for degradation at each stage.
Listeners are sourcing from some compressed format. Barring a few outliers, the devices have poor signal processing, and/or send it out over Bluetooth. The monitor is some small portable speaker, if not the device speaker.
