The author argues that holding on to hope is not a bad thing by itself, but it can only last so long until it breaks.
But optimism without hope, without any expectations, simply being optimistic for the sake of it, is entirely disconnected from whatever actually happens in the world around you.
And it's actually easier to keep this attitude up indefinitely than it is with hope for a better future.
