Just about the companies, time consuming solutions and patents.
IP doesn't requires to be patented in most cases. The IP is protected without any further action when you create something that match the definition ofnthe IP (must be individual and original). See WIPO for more information.
The IP personal rights cannot be sold. However, the property rights to IP can be the subject of contracts.
Many companies stipulate in their employment contracts that any IP you create belongs to them. That is why you get paid. These type of companies tipically exists in the Silicon Valley.
However, if you do not work under such a contract and you create IP, then you have the exclusive right to give property rights to someone. This means that others can only acquire any property rights with your permission - under a usage agreement -, and they must pay you a fee in any case. You can only waive the fee by making an express statement (see e.g. GPL).
