I reached out to his mother, but it's been literal years since we spoke and I don't even know if the number I have for her still works.
This is the second cousin I've lost in their 20s (first was an overdose). And while neither was the kind of guy who'd garner much sympathy from most people, they were still people with their while lives ahead of them--plenty of time for a redemption story. Or not! But now we'll never know.
