Cities and entire nations just wiped off the map, complete collapse of the economy, constant fear of deadly disease, and then you get foreign invaders with futuristic weapons who bring all kind of strange alien animals with them.
Had there been more historical records from native populations at the time, the historical fiction we could have would be just ghastly.
