Whilst not being aware of 'yogh' itself I was always aware that the lower case handwritten zed (looking like your character here) can be mistaken for a lower case gee. In many a scribbled signature - especially in 19th C US - the name Menzies finding its way back to Mingus through a linguistic backdoor as it were.
As a kid I always called the stationers Menzies 'Mingus,' having been schooled at a young age on the correct pronunciation.
