I just got around to trying it:
curl -d 75 mqtt://user:pass@192.168.2.12/house/wibble
And a queue bound to receive it got the message with 75 as the payload.
Was simpler than I thought it would be.
NB: I'm using RabbitMQ here with MQTT enabled but it worked just fine
