I'm lucky that I looked like them. Unlike someone whose racial makeup was not from Europe. I remember as a kid the people that came up from Florida city to help us with the okra were treated like trash when we would go into town to get ice and supplies. Even though I was maybe 11 or 12 the store owners would always talk to me saying their accents make them difficult to understand.

In the evenings I would take the other kids and we would go to the guava orchid and have guava fights. And have to be hosed down afterwards. I remember the girls squealing when the guava maggots were squirming on them And after awhile tossing guava bombs like the rest of us.

Wonder if they grew up to hate okra as much as I do?
