Really fascinating question. I’d love to have a classification system for the types of things often thought of as machines.
As I ponder it, I wonder about the machine-vs-not distinction - what are you thinking there? You imply that hurricanes are not machines. But there are important parallels between those and machine-like things (say brains and other complex systems). So I’m curious to hear a bit more: why might the machine cs not distinction be interesting/important/special?
