I really love what Palmer Luckey is doing with ModRetro Chromatic, and with them also selling new carts it's closer than anyone else to succeed at just ressurecting a dead console. It's not like Analogue who made a modernized way to play those games and added a lot of features, or chinese emulator consoles, or modded old systems which require sourcing. From what I see, the Chromatic is pretty much just "what if a perfected GBC was just still a thing that you can buy?" Not really modernized, just improved.

The price is the sticking point. I wish I could justify it. It's especially the games that are too expensive. I get that this is what we used to be okay paying for such games before, and that these are not necessarily worse than the games from the era, but absent the rarity factor and the fact of owning an object that hasn't been produced in 30 years or so, I just cannot imagine myself paying 50$ for an itch.io game on a cart. And the obvious answer, to get an Everdrive and put the games on it myself would kind of kill my interest in the Chromatic itself...
