Climax forest trees; like kauri, rimu, and kahikatea, grow naturally in the shelter of established forest cover. Where mycelium networks connect them with the roots of existing trees. Whereas fire trees like manuka and kanuka, and nitrogen-fixers like kowhai, naturally grow in open areas cleared by landslips, the collapse of large trees etc.

Yet I often see climax trees planted in the open. Why do people do this, when they almost certainly outgrow any close shelter and support, and die?
