Daily Roman History:
During a war between Rome and neighbouring city Clusium in 506 BC a Roman soilder, named Gaius Mucius Cordus, snuck into the enemy camp that was besieging the city to try and kill their king, one Lars Porsena. After mistakenly killing the king's scribe he was captured. When brought before the king he declared he was but the first of many assassins and Romans do not fear pain or death. To emphasize this point he put his right hand in a nearby fire and let it burn without flinching. Sufficiently freaked out the King let him go saying "Go back, since you do more harm to yourself then me". A peace envoy was sent by the King shortly after. For his feats Cordus was given the cognomen "Scaevola", meaning "left-handed".
