6 months ago I posted a tweet thread asking if someone could build a bitcoin evangelism tool to print off little cards to carry around letting you tip sats on the lightning network where if the tip goes unclaimed, the tip comes back to you.
https://twitter.com/Lightsats21/status/1600599547859898387Lightsats was born, they entered the legends of lightning hackathon and built lightsats.com which won the hackathon.
This week I got to finally use it in Dubai.
There were over 300 staff at the Waldorf Astoria in Dubai where Satoshi Roundtable was held last week. They were all foreign workers from all over the world earning money in Dubai to send to their families back home.
I printed off over 300 tip cards and I spent a good amount of my time giving $10 lightning network tips to the staff as I saw them and interacted with them around the hotel.
You wouldn’t think $10 is meaningful, but while having conversations with the staff about bitcoin, many from countries like Nigeria, Philippines, India, Kazakstan, etc, I saw a spark of genuine interest and a real smile.
A few times people said “wow really, Bitcoin for me? I didn’t think I could have Bitcoin.”
About a dozen times the staff told me they already had crypto with binance or another exchange, one guy lost $3000 if his savings in Terra LUNA.
Many conversations were had with staff in their 20s to 60s, about how bitcoin on their own wallet was different than a crypto exchange which owned their money.
Many people were from countries with capital controls & failing currencies … there was genuine interest in learning more about Bitcoin, there’s something different about actually using and owning Bitcoin vs just buying crypto on an exchange.
We have a lot of work to do to onboard the next billion.
