Well, one thing that really helps is automation.
We're spending a lot of time and energy, up-front, to think up ways to automate everything we possibly can, so that we can reduce our efforts and running costs, in the long-term, and scale up painlessly. We don't really mind donating that effort because it's a temporary one and means we can later crush the competition on price.
That's the part almost all other projects skip, as they're usually just software devs and are extremely thin on the DevOps side, but we're used to servicing large-scale projects and there's just no point in building a Big Data project like #Alexandria or #GitRepublic and not starting off with the intention of being able to onboard lots of users, deal with scrapers and DDOS attacks, massive uploads and crawlers, and etc.
Have to set it all up to scale horizontally, automatically, and run without human intervention.
