Meta has reached out to instances in the fediverse to make some inquiries. Sort of a get to know the neighbors thing.
But this isn't a typical neighborhood. If an instance decides it doesn't want to be in the same neighborhood as Metafediland, it can do more than just shut its door and not invite the Metians to the neighborhood BBQ.
The instance can block Meta, which basically makes the instance's house disappear from the neighborhood. It can't be seen by the Metians in Metafediland. And if enough instances block Meta, all of the Metians will only be able to interact with Metians, which then brings us back to the new user problem. Meta is moving its users into the fediverse, but it will really only be a new platform filled with Meta users and any Twitter defectors who thought the fediverse was too hard.
So, are we supposed to be like the old, now defunct Welcome Wagon? Is Meta assuming our wit and wisdom (and we are witty and wise) will charm their current users?
