I honestly feel like Discourse or so would be a more suitable choice if GitHub issues/discussions alone aren't enough.
I know that Discourse has it's own challenges and is rather bloated, especially on lower-end devices, but I'm not sure if Discord would necessarily be better in that regard. At least it's not a walled garden.
