The Romans relied on augury to determine the timing and location of their attacks, which has always seemed wild to me, imagine generals staking the lives of thousands of soldiers on the sight of some odd bird that morning.
Yet, war is a perfect case where a random approach can actually pay off. When choosing whether to hit the enemy’s right or left flank, you don’t want them guessing your move and stacking their strongest defenses there. If you’re typically predictable (and you are), handing your strategy over to the whims of strange birds might just be the smartest play.
