The use of lit is a separate conversation that's unrelated to how Shoelace has decided to implement their Web Components. Lit could be used with progressively enhanced Web Components, or JS-required ones.
That said, I think using a dependency to create Web Components completely erodes the "platform native and dependency-free" selling point.
