Honestly the way you were going about it would put most people off and is very prone to complications like those you are experiencing. It is like going on the monkey bars and being afraid to take your hand off one bar before going to the next one.
My suggestion would be to go back to your friend and say after researching more on the situation. Let us try this again using a more stable fool proof method i discovered. We are going to go all in on Linux. No need for winblows, or crappy ntfs file systems which are prone to excessive bullshit errors too.
Go with OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, or NixOS with KDE for the operating system if you are a little more advanced of a linux user. Both are rock solid and stable options. No dual booting winblows. If you need to run winblows software go to flathub.org and install bottles. This will allow you to install and run most winblows software gracefully if needed within linux.
When transferring large files with KDE I prefer not to use the native dolphin file manager. Sometimes, not all the time, it does have issues when transferring large files and crashes. I find it is best to use the file manager Thunar. It is lightweight and handles huge file transfers the best out of all the file managers available on linux.
Then install the software required to format the external hard drive to UDF. This format handles large files very well. It also has crossplatform compatibility between winblows, crapple, and linux operating systems. I believe the software required to use the udf format is called udfutils, but do a quick search to double check how to install it on your distro of choice. Use a gpt partition table with the udf format too.
I believe these suggestions will provide the best overall experience for someone just starting out on Linux with KDE. As well as gracefully solve your large file transfer problems.
