unfortuately the cheapest spinning rust was as far as the budget could stretch at short notice. a friend's very old laptop with important files crashed and wouldn't reboot. I got new HDDs for backup and starting a fresh OS install so did wonder if they were just faulty.

this afternoon windows did a scan and "fix", they seem ok now (no corrupted files, just some blank ones that failed to copy) and have copied 50GBs without issue. disk utility couldn't find any problems with them.

he would like to get off the scamware and was up for trying KDE - with windows boot partition as a fall back (perhaps this in itself introduced the problems). the linux system crashed multiple times whilst copying files to an NTFS partition (GPT?) and wouldn't mount, then the last time would not reboot. that was too scary and exhausting, has put him off a bit.

I will try to use windows to copy the files then once they're safe he may reconsider linux as it was working nicely except the copying

appreciate your response
