Literally every time I look at Nostr I see dozens of much better informed people than me writing "Don't put your bitcoin there. It's dangerous" "Self-host. but not like that." "You have to know what you're doing" "Learn about this/that way to protect your bitcoin" "This scam is bad" "Scammers are everywhere"
I often use open-source software. Like most people I don't audit the code. So of course there's a small chance that malicious code I have on my computer can do me something nasty. But I don't have the keys to my life savings on my device đ
One guy two weeks ago downloaded a bitcoin wallet from Cannonical's SnapStore. He put in his special code and in the blink of an eye lost half a million dollars worth of bitcoin.
Try doing that with fiat money đ
95% of the population has none of the necessary computer skills to safely secure their life savings on some device in their living rooms.
Entrusting their life savings to the Bankman-Frieds of the world is not a safe solution either.
I know much more than average about computers. I know that nobody really has much incentive to hack my family's devices. So they don't.
But add huge amounts of crypto to the equation and suddenly very smart hackers will be very tempted to try to break in and get some lucrative codes.
