This weekend after a panel someone came to me and asked where they could "follow me" as in "see more of what you do and think" which is a huge compliment of course.
So I gave my Mastodon handle ("Mastodon, what is that?") and then my Website. They then they asked whether I had a podcast.
It was fascinating to get that glimpse into how different people take in and want to take in info. Like I am a reader: I want articles to flow into my feed reader that I can link to and easily quote. Others prefer the audio format (which I also like for certain formats but I wouldn't use it to follow a person's thinking). There's also of course YouTube.
This creates these strange feelings of "do I need to do X"? Like for me it's very hard to say no to things that people ask me for, I am just a tad to insecure to "just do my own thing". On the other hand I do know the amount of work and overhead that media-heavy production (audio as well as video) bring that neither fits my skills nor schedule nor self-image TBH.
But my mind keeps coming back to this situation trying to trick me into taking on more than I can do. It is very cool to have a bit of an audience and reach as a single individual without specific skills or a supporting organization but it's also very hard to protect yourself against the external demands and asks. It's cool to publish and maybe even be read/seen but being a publisher? It's very stressful and not ideal for my personality type.
