From my limited experience and travels, there appear to be considerable regional/national differences in Spanish. Spanish in Texas is different than Spanish in Mexico, Colombia, etc.
I contrast that with my Russian studies.
The iron fist of the Soviet Union made damn sure that everyone studied and spoke Moscow Russian.
