This bit of your life reminded me so much of my childhood best friend, except that her parents, as an open diktat, refused to permit her friendship with other black kids, beyond the expectation that she would marry a black man one day. One day far into the future! I noticed this, and was curious, but I rarely remarked to her about things I felt were outside my realm of understanding.
We only grew apart as we grew up, bc my parents slightly reduced the tension on my leash in high school, but her parents never did. We went to a school that had to bring in non-white children from "across the river" to meet integration requirements, and to those kids, it was like she was invisible. I don't know how that felt to her.
She was also a theatre kid. (I painted the sets.) If she was considered a deep south "token," I imagine it was made easier to our overlords bc she was excruciatingly competent.
My future husband pulled out one of her braids in middle school, not understanding it was sewn in, and looked at it in his hand as if he had de-limbed her. I am sure there was a lot she could say about hair, too, bc hers was straightened most of the time.
Great storytelling, Turtle.
