You want to help people then help them. But coercively funded programs are the root of most problems. Removing licensing & restrictions & the theft that destroys upward mobility is the first step. People being "generous" with other people's money need to be recognized & treated like the criminals they are if we want a better world.
Irrational feelings divorced from economic realities are a large part of the problem. You cannot reduce scarcity by confiscating the rewards of productivity from people who produce. You can only exacerbate the problem by destroying the desire to be productive. The way to reduce poverty is to make it easier to be productive. Handouts, when they aren't destructive, generally achieve very little.
Tom's Shoes actually destroyed shoe maker businesses in many African communities by handing out shoes. Even private charity can do more harm than good. We are a trading species, "altruism" is generally retarded.
