I do think it's ad hominem unless you can show that the theories themselves are wrong. Hume said true things, regardless if he was generally confused or confused in other specific domains. Many mathematicians believe in nonsense, but their proofs stand for themselves. If a Nazi discovered the moon, it'd still be there. Trump says things that are true too, despite how incredibly poorly and how evil he is. This is why we have to engage with the propositions and theories per se.
